An impromptu whiskey fizz…
On a gorgeous day in Charm City, there I was…in the kitchen. Avoiding laundry. Again. It was entirely too gorgeous to stay inside but I didn’t have time for a big cooking project. Next best thing? A cocktail, of course! So, I looked in the pantry and fridge and it came to me. Whiskey + rosemary with a little sweet peach/blood orange. Texted my friend: Would you like for me to bring you a drink? Her answer? “Hells, yeah.”
For this one, I had Jim Beam on hand, thanks to a friend who cleaned out his liquor cabinet. (Love.) I started with a clean glass bottle, added whiskey, three sprigs of rosemary and a few wedges of a very ripe peach. Shook it up a bit and then let it sit for about 30 minutes. While it was infusing, I made a simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water) on the stove and let that cool. When I was ready to make the drink, I added large ice cubes to a glass and added the infused bourbon, a splash of simple syrup and topped it off with some delicious fizzy San Pellegrino blood orange soda. If you want it to be more tart, just use club soda or whatever you like. Add a sprig of rosemary for a garnish. Start sipping.
As my friend Jenny and I sat along Chestnut Avenue enjoying our cocktails, my friend Eric came by…we made him one, too. And I forgot all about that pesky laundry.
Fall’s coming. I’m excited about more autumnal (to quote my dear friend Gayle) cocktails. You know…Manhattans, Old Fashioneds and more. I’m a big fan of whiskey – so many things go nicely with it. It warms you right up, no? My dad wasn’t a big drinker, but when he had a drinky poo, it was a Manhattan. He was a really smart guy.
